A video still shows young people in dialogue with each other sitting around a table. Their faces are full of expression, and their hands are gesturing towards each other. The background is out of focus but resembles a classroom with drawings pinned to the wall.

We had originally planned this event to include the screening followed by drinks and networking. Unfortunately, due to pandemic-related reasons, the LUX Scotland team will no longer be attending in-person.

The screening of Éric Baudelaire’s Un Film Dramatique will go ahead as planned at the Belmont filmhouse where Covid safety measures remain in place. We’re sorry that the event has had to change at such short notice and hope to reschedule this event in full in the new year and hope you can join us then.

We are delighted to present a screening of Éric Baudelaire’s Un Film Dramatique at the Belmont Filmhouse, Aberdeen.

This public screening event is part of a wider professional development programme by LUX Scotland for early career Aberdeen-based artists and curators. The programme includes workshops, screening and discussion events and is supported by Aberdeen City Council Creative Funding.

Éric Baudelaire, Un Film Dramatique, 2019.

A blurring of boundaries between subject and author. Filmmaker Éric Baudelaire collaborated with students at the Dora Maar school in Saint-Denis commune, a mainly migrant community in the suburbs of Paris.

Beginning in 2015 the film takes shape over four years following the passage of students through middle school and everyday life. Meetings took place every three weeks with no teaching, workshopping or plan. Making was framed instead through what was happening in the world, in school and learning from the material gathered.

Interested in the possibilities of transferring authorship Baudelaire’s proposal was to make a film about them, gradually with them to a film made by them. Un Film Dramatique features the students’ insights on their young lives as they offer personal reflections and join in shared discussions about politics, identity, place and belonging. A time for them to grow together, time to find the form of a film in which they would be the true subjects: it’s characters, its authors and its promise. Compiling individual and communally made footage, the film explores the joyful possibilities of growing and making together.
