Aurélien Froment, 464 Years of Cinematography

This screening presents a series of films by Edinburgh-based French artist, Aurélien Froment. Froment’s practice involves a wide range of media, formats and idiosyncratic methodologies that work in dialogue with existing sources. Froment immerses himself in the oeuvres of others: an artist, an architect, a musician, a mnemonist, those who have dedicated their lives to creating and shaping a body of work, forming continents unto themselves. His work takes the approach of ventriloquism, speaking to and through such individuals.

464 Years of Cinematography is an ongoing series of screenings started in Mumbai in 2015, which brings together a selection of material filmed by Froment over the last 15 years.

The screening will be followed by a conversation between Froment and curator David Upton.

The venue has step free access to all floors.

In conjunction with this screening, Froment will present Dialogues of the Exiled (1975) by prolific Chilean film-maker, Raúl Ruiz. This screening forms part of Froment’s ​‘Slow Retrospective’, a project which aims to show every work by the director in a potentially lifelong retrospective.

Aurélien Froment (b.1976) was born in Angers and currently lives and works in Edinburgh. He studied at the École Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Nantes, from which he graduated in 2000. Recent solo exhibitions include Even Scratched to Death, a Simple Rectangle, Meessen De Clercq, Brussels, 2018; Double Tales, M‑Museum, Leuven, 2017 and Allegro Largo Triste, Passerelle Centre d’art contemporain, Brest, 2017.
