This panel discussion will explore questions around funding and financial sustainability in artists’ moving image practices, through historical and contemporary examples. The discussion will investigate the implications of artists working across exhibition contexts (cinema and gallery) and the effects that this mixed model (between distribution royalties and commercial sales) bears, both financially and creatively. Speakers include artist and filmmaker Luke Fowler, producer James Mackay and academic researcher and writer Dr Sarah Neely.

This event, and all events in the Behind the Scenes series, will by BSL interpreted. The venue has step free access to all floors, and carries audio induction loops.

About the speakers

Luke Fowler

Luke Fowler is an artist, filmmaker and musician based in Glasgow. His work explores the limits and conventions of biographical and documentary filmmaking, and has often been compared to the British Free Cinema of the 1950s. Fowler has exhibited widely over the last twenty years including solo exhibitions at The University of Chicago; Harvard Film Archive, Cambridge; Whitechapel Gallery, London (all 2015); Plymouth Arts Centre (2013); and Inverleith House, Edinburgh (2012). He has also participated in numerous group exhibitions at Netwerk/​Center for Contemporary Art, Belgium (2017); Raven Row, London (2015); Arnolfini, Bristol; Scottish National Portrait Gallery, Edinburgh (both 2014); Tate Britain, London; MOMA, New York; Malmö Konsthall, Malmö (all 2013); British Art Show 7: In the Days of the Comet, Hayward Gallery, London, Glasgow and Plymouth (2011); and The Power Plant, Toronto. In 2012 he was nominated for the Turner Prize.

James Mackay

James Mackay was Cinema Programmer for the London Film-maker’s Coop 1978 – 1980. He also programmed for the Edinburgh International Film Festival, the Forum in Berlin and the B2 Gallery, London in the early 80s. Between 1981and 1993 he produced several film projects with Derek Jarman including Imagining October; Angelic Conversation; The Last of England, The Garden” and Blue. In addition to working with Jarman, Mackay also produced films for Ron Peck, John Maybury, Nina Danino, Hannah Collins, Davide Pepe and others as well as a string of music videos for The Smiths, Bob Geldof, Pet Shop Boys among others. Since 2000 he has concentrated on programming and curating including the microcinema series at the Cambridge Film Festival.

Dr Sarah Neely

Sarah Neely is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Stirling, where she also serves as the director of the Stirling Centre for Scottish Studies. Her recent research focuses primarily on Scottish cinema and artists’ moving image. Her publications include Margaret Tait: Poems, Stories and Writings (as editor, Carcanet, 2012) and Between Categories: The Films of Margaret Tait (Peter Lang, 2016). She also has an article on the role of archives and collections in the history of artists’ moving image in Scotland in the recent, special double issue of the Moving Image Review and Art Journal, edited by Lucy Reynolds and Benjamin Cook.
