LUX Scotland and GoMA presents: Charlotte Prodger, Stoneymollan Trail

Stoneymollan Trail (2015) and SaF05 (2019) symbolically bookend a creative journey in Charlotte Prodgers’ practice, forming two ends of a trilogy of works including BRIDGIT (2016).

The feature-length Stoneymollan Trail, commissioned for the 2014 Margaret Tait Award, marked a significant shift in Prodger’s practice – a move away from her previous multi-monitor installations toward the more cinematic logic of single-screen projection. Named after an ancient ​‘coffin road’ linking the Firth of Clyde with Loch Lomond, Stoneymollan Trail traces a history of recent video formats as well as the artist’s personal history. Moving image has been at the core of Prodger’s work for two decades. Its ever-evolving formats are inextricably bound to the autobiographical content of her work. She has mined the material properties of numerous moving image formats, not just because they inherently get replaced over time, but because she is fascinated by their formal parameters and sociopolitical histories; the sticky relationship between form and content. The non-linear miscellany of Stoneymollan Trail explores shifting interrelations between technology, time, landscape, language and loss.

This special event coincides with the first screening in Glasgow of SaF05 on Wednesday 3 July. Commissioned by Scotland + Venice – a partnership between Creative Scotland, British Council Scotland and the National Galleries of Scotland – with funding support from the National Lottery through Creative Scotland, and curated by Linsey Young with Cove Park, SaF05 builds upon Prodger’s sustained exploration of subjectivity, self-determination and queerness. SaF05 will be introduced by members of the Scotland + Venice team and will be followed by the short film documenting the project development made by Connolly Clark Film and will be followed by a talk with members of the Scotland + Venice Professional Development Programme team who have been involved in the development and presentation of Charlotte Prodger’s new commission.

The screening of Stoneymollan Trail forms part of Stalking the Image, an exhibition and series of events celebrating the life, work and legacy of the pioneering Orcadian filmmaker, painter and poet, Margaret Tait (1918 – 99) presented in partnership by GoMA and LUX Scotland to coincide with Margaret Tait 100, a year-long nationwide programme celebrating the centenary of Margaret Tait’s birth. In a first for the Scotland + Venice partners this newly commissioned work is touring cinemas across the west coast, Highlands and Islands at the same time as it is being presented to audiences in Venice. The Tour is supported by Screen Scotland, Art Fund and Outset Scotland.

The new single-channel video installation by Charlotte Prodger is commissioned and promoted on the occasion of the 58^th International Art Exhibition, La Biennale di Venezia, by Scotland + Venice – a partnership between Creative Scotland, British Council Scotland and the National Galleries of Scotland – with funding support from the National Lottery through Creative Scotland.
