This screening presents O.K. Rick (2014), by filmmaker Florrie James. The film was developed during and inspired by the time James spent on Orkney for the Margaret Tait Residency 2014.

Set on the fictional island, Mainland‑5, the film imagines female versions of Rick Blain and Victor Laszlo from Casablanca travelling the island to collect data for the National Census. During their journey, walking and hitchhiking, they encounter struggles surrounding ownership of the shore, ideas of democratic representation, and their own feelings of powerlessness within the structures of government manipulation and exploitation.

The Margaret Tait Residency aims to support and develop the skills of an emerging Scottish-based artist working within film and moving image. It was developed for artists early in their career who would benefit from a focused period of development in a stimulating environment outwith their typical studio base. The residency is supported by Creative Scotland in conjunction with Pier Arts Centre and LUX Scotland.
