Gripping Wrists is a screening of artists’ moving image works programmed by artist-led initiative Tendency Towards. Focusing variously on the production of desire, rituals and mechanisms, as well as the influence of mythology and storytelling on social constructs, the works in the programme share an interest in the narrative of communal spaces, exploring the conjunction of language and physical staging.

Gripping Wrists marks the first stage in a series of curatorial research projects that Tendency Towards is undertaking, that reflect on organisational and relationship structures within artist-led initiatives and their wider publics.

About Tendency Towards

Tendency Towards is an artist-led initiative based in Aberdeen that operates a programme of exhibitions, workshops, discussion and engagement events nomadically across the city. The initiative was founded in 2016 by six graduating Gray’s School of Art students (Yvette Bathgate, Jessica Barrie, Paula Buškevica, Donald Butler, Mary Gordon and Jake Shepherd). With their programme they seek to promote and support emerging contemporary arts practices, carving out a space for experimental approaches to arts production within the city’s creative ecology.

Currently the committee are exploring collaborative modes of production within their programme, engaging with other projects and initiatives within the city and beyond to address structural and labor issues. These methods of collaborative production look to frame artist-led activity as a civic meeting point.
