Our first online LUX Critical Forum, for participants based in Aberdeen will begin in November 2021.

The LUX Critical Forum is a peer-led monthly discussion group for artists, curators, writers, researchers and other arts professionals who work with the moving image to talk about ideas and practice in a mutually supportive environment.

We expect that the group will include participants at an earlier stage in their careers and people who would value discussing their work and sharing research with a new peer group and those who want to make new connections in Aberdeen.

Please note that the group is for those who are no longer in full-time education.

Over the course of the first three meetings each participant will be required to make one short presentation (up to 10 mins) about something they are currently working on and then take questions and feedback from the rest of the group in turn. The group will be informal, supportive and aims to establish a structure for mutual critical feedback for everyone taking part. Over time, the group can select works from the LUX Collection to all watch in advance of their meetings as the basis for discussion related to their individual research.

To establish this new group, meetings will initially take place weekly and then after three introductory meetings (hosted by LUX Scotland) the group will set their own monthly meeting dates for January 2022 and beyond. Participants are expected to attend all three meetings and commit to the group for at least 3 months.

The first set dates are: 6–8pm on Wednesday 17 November, Wednesday 1 December and Wednesday 8 December 2021.We have a maximum of 12 spaces available. To join the group please sign up for a place via Eventbrite. Booking is available until the 15th November and is on a first come first served basis.

The group will meet online, via ZOOM, and will be introduced by Eve Smith, Learning Programme Manager at LUX Scotland and joined by Rachel Grant, Project Manager, Aberdeen Programme. Eve will facilitate discussion for the first three meetings, then step back to allow the group to continue as a peer-led group, with future meetings organised and directed by the membership. LUX Scotland will continue to support the group by providing access to research viewings of work in the LUX collection.

LUX Critical Forum Aberdeen is part of a wider professional development programme for Aberdeen-based artists and curators. This includes a programme of workshops, screening events and discussions and is supported by Aberdeen City Council Creative Funding.

Image description: A film still shows a close up of overlapping leaves and on the right a thick tree branch. The colours are dark almost black with dark green hues that shape the outlines of the leaves. In the blurred background there are spots of white as if the image has been taken standing underneath the tree gazing upwards through the foliage towards sunlight.
