a black and white film still depicts a close up of a hand writing on a pad of paper with a pencil. We cannot decipher what the person is writing, only see a vague outline of words across the top of the page.

Presented as part of Demarco Archive Exhibitions, join us for an evening of films and discussion exploring the relationship between Tait’s written poetry and her work as a filmmaker, programmed to coincide with the current exhibition, Interim Edition: The Margaret Tait Poetry Archive.

The programme includes Rose Street (1956, 14 min), Where I Am Is Here (1964, 35 min), Palindrome (1964, 6 min), and Tailpiece (1976, 9 min), and will be followed by a conversation with Richard Demarco (friend of Tait’s and great champion of her work) and Dr Sarah Neely (curator of the current exhibition).

Her poetry reveals how her creative thinking encompassed, in equal measure, the profound truths embodied in both artistic and scientific thinking […] Her life and art reveal her right to be firmly placed within the history of 20th century Europe.’

— Professor Richard Demarco CBE, October 2018

This event is presented in partnership with Demarco Archive Exhibitions and Margaret Tait 100, a year-long centenary celebration of the work of Scotland’s pioneering filmmaker and poet, Margaret Tait (1918 – 99).
