In advance of the premiere of her 2017/2018 Margaret Tait Award commission entitled April (2018), Sarah Forrest presents a programme that includes her own recent films alongside a selection of other moving image and audio works. To preface the development of April, the selected works explore the interplay between image and voice, the mechanics of narrative, and ideas around absence, presence and perception.

In Forrest’s practice, an experience of doubt (intellectual/emotional/psychological) is often used to destabilise the familiar. Objects misbehave. Holes appear in reality. Appearances deceive. Nothing can be something felt, perceived as present. In both filmmaking and writing, she uses this moment of friction to explore tensions between text/image, fact/fiction, material/immateriality, and subject/object.

Sarah Forrest and Nicole Yip (Director, LUX Scotland) will be in conversation following the screening.

About the artist

Sarah Forrest

After studying at Duncan of Jordanstone, Dundee, Sarah Forrest gained her masters from Glasgow School of Art in 2010, during which time she also studied at the Piet Zwart Institute, Rotterdam. Forrest has held solo exhibitions at CCA in Glasgow (Two Solo Shows: Sarah Forrest and Mounira Al Sohl in 2013), Supplement in London (I Left it on Page 32 in 2014) and Kunstraum Dusseldorf in Germany (Again, it objects in 2016). Her work has been presented at international film festivals, including the International Film Festival Rotterdam (2014) and she has completed numerous residencies, including the inaugural Margaret Tait Residency in 2012. She is the 2017/2018 recipient of the Margaret Tait Award.
