Directing Horizontally is a SUPERLUX reading group led by artist Corin Sworn who will introduce methods employed in her new work Habits of Assembly, commissioned by Edinburgh Art Festival (2019), that is currently in production.
Looking back to experimental intermedia performances (such as Set and Reset, 1983, by choreographer Trisha Brown with artist/composer Laurie Anderson), which intermingled bodies, sound and cameras, Habits of Assembly brings together sculptural elements, video and choreography, to read technologies in parallel with the body and explore their impact and influence on one another.
This new work is being developed through reacting together in improvisation, collaborative story-telling and open scoring and will be presented at Edinburgh College of Art’s Sculpture Court from 25 July – 25 August 2019.
This reading group will involve some group reading including discussing Ursula Le Guin’s Carrier Bag Theory of Fiction, that participants are welcome to read in advance. We will also be discussing poet Lisa Robertson’s Spatial Synthetics: A Theory.
Participants will be sent a link to listen to an online recording of this text when they book their place. These texts will be used to look at strategies that Sworn employs while moving across the work towards its fruition.
Corin Sworn (born 1976 in London) grew up in Toronto. She moved to Vancouver to study Psychology at the University of British Columbia before studying an art degree at Emily Carr University of Art + Design. She moved to Glasgow in 2007 to complete an MFA at The Glasgow School of Art.
Recent solo exhibitions include WORKHOUSE at Koppe Astner (2018); Gallery Gallery Arsenal, Poland (2016); Jeux d’Eté, Chicago (2016); Collezione Maramotti, Reggio Emilia (2015); Whitechapel Gallery, London (2015); Langen Foundation (2015); Sydney Biennial (2014). She is associate professor of Fine Art at the Ruskin School of Drawing & Fine Art, Oxford and was one of three artists in the Scotland + Venice 2013 exhibition for the 55th Venice Biennale. Sworn lives and works in Glasgow and was awarded the Max Mara Art Prize for Women in 2014.
