The LUX Scotland Collection at Glasgow School of Art Library is the first dedicated library for artists’ moving image in Scotland. The library aims to enable GSA students, library members and members of the SUPERLUX community to gain access to a breadth of resources around moving image practices.
The collection was established in 2016 as a collaboration between LUX Scotland and the Glasgow School of Art and provides access to a range of publications and DVDs on artists’ moving image practice, history and theory. You can browse the LUX Scotland collection at GSA Library here.
New Artist Selected Titles
To accompany the main collection, we invited seven artists to select publications that expand the collection. Earlier this year we invited Jamie Crewe, Winnie Herbstein, Kimberley O’Neill, Hardeep Pandhal, Mathew Parkin, Tako Taal and Alberta Whittle to contribute a recommendation. We are delighted to announce that the following books will be available to borrow from the library when it re-opens after lockdown:
Bruce Benderson, James Bidgood (2009), recommended by Jamie Crewe; Kaisa Lassinaro, Born in Flames (2011) recommended by Winnie Herbstein; Rose Lowder, Bouquets 11-20: Notebooks by Rose Lowder (2018), recommended by Kimberley O’Neill; Evan Calder Williams, Shard Cinema (2017), recommended by Hardeep Pandhal; Chantal Akerman, My Mother Laughs (2019), recommended by Mathew Parkin; Sylvia Wynter, On Being Human as Praxis (2015), recommended by Alberta Whittle.
Tako Taal chose to compile a new reading list as her contribution to the collection. This decision was prompted by the wider lack of publications about filmmaking “by, or which considers the work of, Black and POC filmmakers and especially womxn”. Her reading list includes links to a selection of online conversations, videos/ artworks by artists who have shaped her thinking as well as some printed books.
GSA library is committed to supporting both institutional and student-led initiatives to diversify the curriculum and have worked with numerous individuals and groups to create a number of ‘alternative reading lists’ that can be viewed here, that aim to introduce a broader range of cultural perspectives. Tako’s reading list will be added to the library collection and website when the library re-opens after lockdown. In the meantime, the reading list can be viewed below:
