LUX Scotland Studio Visits

LUX Scotland are undertaking the next set of our regular paid studio visits with artists based in Scotland who identify as disabled, from Global Majority backgrounds or both. We are inviting simple and brief expressions of interest from artists who would like to share and discuss their work with us at one of these online studio visits.

Selected artists will each be paid a fee of £183.20 for taking part in one of these studio visits. The fee is calculated based on 4 hours work at current Scottish Artist Union rates and includes up to 2 hours of preparation time, 1 hour of meeting time (the studio visit) and 1 hour paid rest time.

Studio visits will last one hour and take place online between 10am-5pm on various dates in November 2026 with our Learning and Public Programme Managers.

We aim for studio visits to be informal and exploratory. We hope that artists who take part will learn about our work as we learn about their practices. While we undertake studio visits with artists at various stages of their careers we do not expect that artists have taken part in studio visits before. Artists may wish to prepare a short presentation of their recent and current work, however there is no requirement to do so.

We are holding these studio visits to broaden our knowledge of artists’ practices as part of our ongoing and regular Disability Justice and Anti-Racism work. Through these meetings we aim to offer useful experiences for artists who would like to discuss their work and research with us and build professional connections with our team. We understand that disabled artists and artists from a Global Majority background face significant barriers to participation in the Scottish arts sector.

We would like to undertake four studio visits with disabled artists and four studio visits with artists from a Global Majority background. We do not expect that artists’ practices, nor conversations taking place within a studio visit are orientated around the lived experience of the artist.

Artists should:

• Be based in Scotland
• Identify as:
  • an artist with lived, professional and/​or caring experience of disability including neurodivergence; and/​or
  • an artist from the Global Majority
• Be working with moving image, video, film and animation or are interested in working with these mediums

In addition:

• Artists do not have to have been in formal education, attended art school or university to apply.
• Artists can be at any career stage.
• Artist collectives and groups are eligible but the fee will remain the same. For larger groups we may ask that a smaller number of representatives conduct the studio visit.
• Students are not eligible to participate.

How do we define disability?

We follow the social model of disability, which says that people are disabled by barriers in society, not by their impairment or difference. This includes anyone who self-identifies as disabled regardless of whether they have received a medical diagnosis.

How do we define Global Majority?

We use the definition coined by educator Rosemary Campbell-Stephens which refers to people from Global Majority backgrounds as Black, Asian, Brown, dual-heritage, indigenous to the global south, and/​or have been racialised as ​‘ethnic minorities’.

We also recognise that people describe themselves in diverse ways and that no single definition will fit everyone. We are committed to developing our understanding and reviewing the language we use as definitions evolve.

We plan for these to be chosen by random selection, from expressions of interest to this open call. We appreciate that many artists may identify as both disabled and from a Global Majority background, so we ask that artists self-identify their eligibility for this open call when submitting their expression of interest. Artists who identify as both disabled and from a Global Majority background will be included in the draw for both groups of studio visits. If an artist’s name is picked twice they will be assigned one studio visit.

Selected artists will have studio visits scheduled over a series of four weeks in November, and we can be flexible to accommodate access requirements.
