Making closed captions for new work | Learning Resource Highlight

Still from direct to film animation. Workshop with Julia Parks, DIY Approaches to Cameraless and 16mm Filmmaking, Pier Arts Centre, July 2022.

In October 2022, we published a Learning Resource on the subject of making closed captions for new work’ with contributions from artists Seo Hye Lee, Rory Pilgrim and Nina Thomas. The artists responded to five set questions on the subject:

  • Could you describe a really positive experience of making and or presenting a captioned work or describe an encounter that you’ve had with a captioned work (either in a gallery, cinema or online presentation) that made an impact on you?
  • How would you encourage an artist who might be sceptical or unsure about captioning to commit to embedding accessibility within their practice?
  • How might artists think about accessibility (for d/Deaf and Hard of Hearing people) at the point of making a new work rather than adding captions afterwards?
  • How can artists make their work more accessible without disrupting carefully composed images by adding captions retrospectively?
  • What might some unexpected benefits be for artists who aren’t familiar with the experience/process?

Our series of written learning resources, each covering a different subject, aim to demystify some of the structures of the art and film worlds that artists working with moving image navigate. We invite three contributors to answer set questions on each subject to offer our readers a range of subjective views and experiences of the topic.
