Part of Now & Next
‘We know a better word than happy’ by Helen McCrorie, commissioned as part of Now & Next 2020, will be screened on BBC Four as part of Female Filmmakers Too: BBC Introducing Arts on Sunday 6 March, 8pm, and will subsequently be available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
‘We know a better word than happy’ captures children’s delight in the possibilities for fun and learning in an urban green space established by community activism in Maryhill, Glasgow. A quarter of households in this area have no access to a private or shared garden and, following lockdown, the children express their rights to outdoor play, for learning, togetherness and resilience.
Helen McCrorie is an artist and filmmaker who collaborates with community groups to make films and sound works that explore sites of work, play and learning. She is based in Perthshire, having previously lived in Glasgow, Edinburgh, France, Hong Kong and Singapore. She has championed loose-parts play and equality of access to green space for many years and ran an outdoor playgroup in Glasgow when her children were young. On moving to Perthshire, she set up a playgroup in the former military camp and community buyout, Cultybraggan. Her 2019 film If play is neither inside nor outside, where is it? which features the playgroup, was shown as part of Edinburgh Art Festival 2019 as a Satellites commission for COLLECTIVE.
Now & Next was a talent development scheme in partnership with Creative Scotland and BBC Scotland that ran from 2019 to 2022.
