For our July ONE WORK screening we are presenting Alkmini Gkousiari’s work ‘You didn’t come from the egg but also not made from soil and water’ (2022).
This short film is a collection of found and personal images and footage that together form the documentation of an entity that enters the human world. This entity comes and goes in and out of the earth’s surface to try and understand and document what lies beneath and above it: fragments of fossils and stones, logic and religion, of cars, dwellings and human activity. With playfulness this something-entity explores the world and its creatures and after its long journey it decides to settle. The work listens to its squeaky voice and sees, through its shaky gaze, journeys through what seem simultaneously like centuries and seconds. This film explores the death of an archive and the birth/creation of a new one by extracting the data from its static and ordered state and presenting a perspective of uncertainty, curiosity and disorder.
On Thursday, 27 July, from 7 – 8pm Alkmini Gkousiari will discuss her work ‘You didn’t come from the egg but also not made from soil and water’ (2020) with LUX Scotland Public Programme Manager, David Upton. You can book a place for this event here.

ONE WORK is a series of online events that focus closely on a single work. These generous discussions provide an opportunity for an artist to present a recent work and talk through how the work came into being. Each work is available as a month-long online screening, a recorded conversation and a specially commissioned written response.
