For the next online event in the ONE ARTIST | ONE WORK series, Anne-Marie Copestake will discuss her super-8mm work, A love (2019).
A love forms an approach to history unfolding in Copestake’s home neighbourhood and within a temporary community. The film foregrounds quiet and tender engagement, respect, various forms of love, presence, absence, and ritual to an extent. There is a deliberate lack of language in the film, underlining the unuttered and recurring inadequacy of language, especially in the expression of uproot and the depth of emotions engendered. A love considers individual and collective values, desire for recognition of lives, and the necessity for communal recognition.
The film was commissioned by Cooper Gallery and presented as part of Copestake’s solo exhibition there in 2019. The commission was also supported by Cove Park and was also screened as part of the Experimenta strand of BFI London Film Festival in 2019.
A love can be viewed for the month of March as part of our online screening. The film will be captioned by Collective Text. The event will be transcribed live using otter.ai live transcription.
LUX Scotland has been holding a series of online events led by artists that was initiated during lockdown last year. For each event, an artist based in Scotland presents a recent work and talks through how the work came into being. Each artist has been joined by one of the LUX Scotland team and up to 40 online participants.
How it works
Our online events will take place on Zoom. The event will be live transcribed using otter.ai live transcription. We will also use the chat space to post questions /comments being raised by the guest artist so they can be referred back to.
We ask that all participants are respectful and listen to the facilitators and other participants. An attendee list will be circulated to all participants in advance of each event. At the beginning of events we will introduce the guest artist and invite participants to briefly introduce themselves and their reason for joining.
During the event discussion, we ask that one person speaks at a time and that you type ‘hi’ in the chat to indicate you want to contribute. A member of the LUX Scotland team will keep a track of who wishes to contribute and will direct the conversation to you. You may also wish to use the chat space to type your question or comment, should this be preferable for you. We ask that you keep your microphones on mute until you are going to speak to ensure everyone can hear clearly. We invite you to have your cameras on, where possible, as this maintains a feeling of being together in the space.

Anne-Marie Copestake is a Glasgow based artist. Working with moving images, audio, text, photography and sculpture, recent work foregrounding unsung legacies have focused on portraits of a kind. With an emphasis on considering conditions that have surrounded choices or a lack of choices, these works explore environments and landscapes that may have contributed essentially to these conditions. Copestake often works collaboratively, most recently with musician Ailbhe Nic Oireachtaigh. Copestake’s moving image works are distributed by LUX.
