We’re excited to present an online screening of the moving image works by young people commissioned as part of Now & Next, 2019 – 22. The online screening is available to view for the months of July and August 2024.

Now & Next was a talent development scheme run by LUX Scotland in partnership with BBC Arts and Screen Scotland. The scheme ran between 2019 – 22 and focused on nurturing and showcasing emerging creative voices. Now & Next offered artists working in a wide range of disciplines from across Scotland the opportunity to create audio and audio-visual commissions for BBC platforms.

Three commissions from each round of Now & Next were created by young people working in partnership with Platform, Easterhouse, and in 2019 – 20 was led by artist Henry Coombes with additional mentorship from artists Margaret Salmon and Duncan Marquiss, and in 2020 – 21 was led by artist Juliana Capes, with additional mentorship from artists Sarah Forrest and Ashanti Harris, with technical and production support from Jen Martin.

The young people who participated in Now & Next created collaborative, experimental and personal work that engaged with ideas ranging from a paranormal talk show and loneliness on the moon, to interpretations of traumatic past experiences. Many of the works created explore the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on mental health and relationships, presenting unique perspectives and approaches to understanding the experiences of young people through isolation and its aftermath.

The works commissioned for this project are available to view with captions and audio description thanks to access materials provided by Valery Tough, LUX Scotland and captions by Collective Text (Nicole o’Reilly- subtitling, Emilia Beatriz- sound description & facilitation, Ciaran Stewart-caption consultation) in conversation with the artists.
