Readings and Book Launch | Lis Rhodes: Telling Invents Told

An afternoon of readings and discussion, organised in partnership with Glasgow Women’s Library and introduced by Maria Palacios Cruz (LUX/​The Visible Press) the second of our events to launch the publication of Telling Invents Told, the first collection of writings by artist and filmmaker Lis Rhodes, published by The Visible Press earlier this year.

Since the 1970s, Rhodes has been making radical and experimental work that challenges hegemonic narratives and the power structures of language. Her writing addresses urgent political issues, as well as film history and theory, from a feminist perspective.

Join Maria with invited artists Lucy Reynolds, Corin Sworn and Sarah Forrest for an afternoon of live readings and discussion around key texts from the publication. Tea, coffee and biscuits will be served.

Good Press is a ground level shop front with paid on street parking. There is a small step at entry, roughly three inches tall. They have a portable wheelchair ramp which can easily be installed for access over the step if required. Their toilet is gender neutral and is located at the rear of the property on ground level, however is not an accessible toilet.

The first part of this book launch takes place at CCA, Glasgow on Friday 6 December. Lucy Reynolds introduces a screening of work by Lis Rhodes.

Corin Sworn (born 1976 in London) grew up in Toronto. She moved to Vancouver to study Psychology at the University of British Columbia before studying an art degree at Emily Carr University of Art + Design. She moved to Glasgow in 2007 to complete an MFA at The Glasgow School of Art.

Recent solo exhibitions include WORKHOUSE at Koppe Astner (2018); Gallery Gallery Arsenal, Poland (2016); Jeux d’Eté, Chicago (2016); Collezione Maramotti, Reggio Emilia (2015); Whitechapel Gallery, London (2015); Langen Foundation (2015); Sydney Biennial (2014). She is associate professor of Fine Art at the Ruskin School of Drawing & Fine Art, Oxford and was one of three artists in the Scotland + Venice 2013 exhibition for the 55^th Venice Biennale. Sworn lives and works in Glasgow and was awarded the Max Mara Art Prize for Women in 2014.

Lucy Reynolds has lectured and published extensively, most particularly focused on questions of the moving image, feminism, political space and collective practice. Her articles have appeared in a range of journals such as Afterall, Screen, Screendance, Art Agenda and Millennium Film Journal, and she has curated exhibitions and film programmes for a range of institutions nationally and internationally.

As an artist, her films and installations have been presented in galleries and cinemas internationally, and her ongoing sound work A Feminist Chorus has been heard at the Glasgow International Festival, Wysing Arts Centre, The Showroom and The Grand Action Cinema, Paris.

She is Senior Lecturer and deputy director of the Centre for Research in Art and Media (CREAM) in the School of Arts at the University of Westminster, and co-editor of the Moving Image Review and Art Journal.

Sarah Forrest is an artist based in Glasgow, whose creative practice incorporates video, writing, object making and installation that she presents in a variety of forms including gallery-based installations, single-screen presentations in cinemas or exhibitions, publications and performances. Solo exhibitions include: Again, it objects, Kunstraum Dusseldorf, Germany (2016); I Left it on Page 32, Supplement, London (2014); Two Solo Shows: Sarah Forrest and Mounira Al Sohl, CCA, Glasgow (2013). Recent group exhibitions include: Maintenant et Encore (with Linda Sanchez), 3 Bis F, Aix-en-Provence, France; Against Time, co-curated by Paula Zambrano and Sarah Strang for Glasgow International, Civic Room, Glasgow; Cabinet Interventions, Glasgow International, Pollok House, Glasgow (all 2018). She was the recipient of the 2017/​18 Margaret Tait Award.
