Xin Huang, 'What Should We Eat After Dreaming?' (2020)

Part of ONE WORK

A vibrantly colourful film still that looks like a painting, a human shape form in green seems to stand out against a vibrant orange background. There are sunbursts of yellow and streaks of purple, red and pink.

For our August ONE WORK screening we are presenting Xin Huang’s work ‘What Should We Eat After Dreaming’ (2020).

In this experimental video, Huang aims to explore how to maximise her own emotions and trigger empathy in the audience for love. To do so, she has divided empathy into two categories: one based on emotions that are universally experienced by humans, and the other based on the individual’s emotions as“I”. Her research on love and images is divided into two parts: fantasy and reality. Huang uses these categories to represent the two most extreme models of love experience. Through the portrayal of the most extreme and mundane love images, she asks the audience: Is there a correlation between the intensity of our experiences and the depth of our love? Do we have to go through the most extreme experiences to experience the greatest love?

For our August ONE WORK event (7 – 8pm on 31 August) Xin Huang will discuss her recent work‘What should we eat after dreaming’ (2020). You can book a place for this event here.

Part of ONE WORK

ONE WORK is a series of online events that focus closely on a single work. These generous discussions provide an opportunity for an artist to present a recent work and talk through how the work came into being. Each work is available as a month-long online screening, followed by a specially commissioned written response that serves as documentation of both the work and the discussion.
