ONE WORK

ONE WORK is a series of online events that focus closely on a single work. These generous discussions provide an opportunity for an artist to present a recent work and talk through how the work came into being. Each work is available as a month-long online screening, followed by a specially commissioned written response that serves as documentation of both the work and the discussion.

A video still depicts a puddle in the rain. The water is a dark grey, speckled with reflections of light and concentric circles of raindrops hitting the surface. The ground surrounding it is a pattern of road surfaces, bricks and concrete and tarmac. Tuffs of greenery edge around the puddle, and an orange ball, or perhaps an orange fruit, sits on an island of wet grass in the puddle.

 An image that the artist has made specifically for this research project, with a turquoise background and the words ‘Rebuilding Urania’ appearing in a white font in capital letters. The word ‘Urania’ is the largest and most prominent. In the background appears a cropped image of the hands of Urania, the muse of astrology. Her hands are pointing to a celestial globe with a staff. Urania was believed to foretell the future by the arrangement of the stars.

Marcus Jack on Anne-Marie Copestake's 'A love'

We commissioned writer Marcus Jack to respond to Anne-Marie Copestake's 'A love'.
A video still shows a dark room, we are close to a wooden table on which are placed two glass objects. We can see the lines of where the table could fold down, and the curve of the table edge across the centre of the image. A bottle, and next to it sits a thin vase with green shoots in it. On top of the objects sits text, large white san serif font that reads ‘ONE’.

Jen Martin on Sarah Forrest’s 'The Unit'

We commissioned writer Jen Martin to respond to Sarah Forrest's 'The Unit' (2021).
A 16mm still shows a close up of a grey-brown branch, the background is out of focus and we can see the rough textures of the tree’s bark. On the branch sits a yellow-orange organic form, a kind of fungi. It’s wiggles and curves are almost alien-like in appearance. Beneath the organic fungi form is yellow san serif italic text, which reads ‘what is this thing?’

Tina Fiske on Mark Lyken's '1300 SHOTS'

We commissioned writer Tina Fiske to respond to Mark Lyken's '1300 SHOTS'.
Two people face the viewer, a white person stands slightly in front of a black person. The white figure wears a light blue shirt, they are clean shaven and have neat grey hair. The black figure also wears a light blue shirt and a brown plaid jacket, they have a greying beard and their hair is tied back. Both of their faces have an expression of resolve. They appear against a blue sky with a parachute behind them in the distance. The colours in the image are slightly desaturated.

a close up of lichen through a macro lens, we can see the details and textures of the organic form in pale greens, beiges and whites. As the curving lines of the lichen come closer to the lens, they blur out of focus. The image is framed by the lines of the 16mm colour film stock.
